A stop-loss is the price at which you admit the trade was wrong and get out — decided before you enter, not in the heat of a drawdown. Trend traders usually place it just below the most recent swing low: close enough to keep the loss small, far enough that normal wobble doesn't shake you out. The exact spot matters less than the discipline of having one and honouring it.
A "mental stop" is not a stop — it's an intention, and intentions crumble when the screen turns red. The fix is a bracket/OCO order that sends the stop to your broker at the same time as the entry, so your calm self makes the decision, not your panicking one. Trendkept does exactly this on every trade, and trails the stop up as the trend climbs.
